Welcome

Sociology is a scientific discipline that seeks to explain social phenomena and social problems by focusing on interactions among people. It is necessary to understand the nature of social relations and social structures in order to think about the future of human society and how we can develop it sustainably. Founded in 1949 with the appointment of Professor Kiyoji Honda (1896-1972), the Department of Sociology at Nagoya University has become a major center for both theoretical and empirical studies. We aim to formulate sociological theory from an Asian perspective while drawing from all of the discipline’s traditions and trends. We research a wide variety of issues in Japan and abroad, employing both qualitative and quantitative methods. We seek to contribute to resolving social problems, including making policy recommendations. We welcome students with the ambition to explore the cutting edge of contemporary sociology. It is a lively and warm place with many friends who discuss and stimulate each other’s mind.
