After receiving a BA in Law at Sophia University, Tokyo, he entered Sophia University’s MA program in International Relations. Then, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley with a primary focus on the fields of International Organizations and International Political Economy. Since getting a Ph.D. in Political Science from Berkeley, he has taught at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Sophia University, and Tokyo Metropolitan University, where he holds the position of Professor Emeritus. He is also currently a visiting researcher at the United Nations University, Tokyo.
